Edna Mae Smith married John Francis Healy, son of Bartholomew J. Healy and Catherine Healy, in 1925. John and Edna met at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He was studying to be a mechanical engineer and she was a fashion illustrator. He was writing to Edna for three years but Edna's mother was intercepting the mail. Finally, he got a hold of her and asked her to marry him. They went to city hall. When they told her mother, she fainted. Afterwards, she said" If you're going to get married , you'll do it in my house". So, she had a reception for them in two days. When they went to CT to Gram Katie's six months later, she said, " If you're going to get married you're going to do it here." and they had another ceremony. Edna joked that she got married three times. Gram Katie was cool toward John's family because Edna was a Protestant.5,6,7
