     John Bromley Smith married Beatrice Welch, daughter of John Welch and Mary Patience Wilson, on 28 January 1903 at 50 South Wilson Street, Waterbury, Connecticut. The couple was joined in marriage by Louis J. Holden, Assistant Pastor of the 2nd Congregational Church.5 John Bromley Smith and Beatrice Welch were divorced.
     With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted its third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registration, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. John Bromley Smith filled out a draft card on 12 September 1918 at Newark, New Jersey, He was of medium height, medium build with blue eyes and light brown hair.21 He resided in September 1918 at 61 James Street, Newark, New Jersey.21

     John Bromley Smith, age 60, appears in the census of 27 April 1940 in Providence, Rhode Island.8 He filled out a draft card on 27 April 1942 at New Haven, Connecticut. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the old man's registration, was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who were born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897-men who were between 45 and 64 years old-who were not already in the military. He was 5 feet 6 1/2 inches tall with blue eyes. His hair was a combination of brown and gray and he had a light complexion..9 He resided in 1942 at 279 Laurel Avenue, Bridgeport, Connecticut, with his aunt Margaret Mathers.9
     John Bromley Smith died on 8 April 1949 at County Hospital, Douglas, Cochise, Arizona, at age 69 from myocardial failure.31 He was buried on 14 April 1949 at Hillside Cemetery, Cheshire, Connecticut.32
