Ruth Parsons, the motivating force behind the effort to establish a community college in Waterbury in the 1960's, was remembered during a September 5 ceremony at Naugatuck Valley Community College. The ceremony included the dedication of Ruth Parsons Drive, the entrance road to the college, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque highlighting her contributions to the community.
As an advocate for public education, Ruth Parsons worked tirelessly to help establish a community college in Waterbury in the 1960s. She volunteered untold hours in educating political leaders and the public of the significant impact a community college could have on the economic development of Waterbury. A journalist at what was then the Waterbury American, Mrs. Parsons died unexpectedly at age 50 in 1973.
Joined by members of the Parsons family, area educators and others, NVCC President Richard L. Sanders explained that the original idea for naming the road was developed by several long-serving members of the college's Regional Advisory Council, who knew and had worked with Mrs. Parsons.
A member of the original Committee for a Waterbury Community College, Mrs. Parsons presented convincing evidence to the Connecticut General Assembly that led to the founding of Mattatuck Community College in 1967, the precursor to NVCC. At the time of her death, she was actively serving on the college's advisory committee.
Fran Brennan, director of the University of Connecticut Waterbury campus and a member of NVCC's Regional Advisory Council, recalled Mrs. Parsons as an outstanding "reporter" whose involvement in educational and political issues resulted in "wide-ranging contributions" to the community.
"I have long been an advocate of this action being taken on behalf of Ruth Parsons, the unsung heroine of the Founders of Mattatuck Community College," said Dr. Lawrence Shea, who served with Mrs. Parsons on the committee to establish the higher education center..19
