It showed that he was an errand boy for about two years and for the last 12 months had worked in a rolling mill. It was written that he was "not a vagrant but associated with lads of bad character." "Under pretense of buying cigarettes, boy entered a shop, and was caught in the act of stealing 2 pence from the till by the attendant. Boy says he and his companions have often stolen money in the same way."
He resided with his parents who stated that for some time he had become unmanageable. His father was a police constable in Sheffield Borough Force.8
