Alice M. Guest died on 17 November 1996 at Hartford, Connecticut, at age 87.14
The following tribute was written by Evelyn Fortna in the Vasar Quarterly Review: Family and friends of Alice Guest Howson gathered recently to pay homage to this gentle, strong, gracious lady. Alice joined Vassar's English Department in 1945. She married Professor of Religion Howard Howson after his wife had died and became a much-loved stepmother to the three Howson children.
Her hard work, insight, and wisdom were evidenced in many facets of her life: The league of Women Voters, the First Congregational Church, and Volunteer Caregivers, which she helped to found. She became study couselor at the college in 1952, a position that she held for almost 25 years. She used her knowledge and sensitivity, and high academic standards to influence countless students to appreciate learning as a life-long pursuit. After caring for her husband until his death, she began a support group for widows at Vassar Brothers Hospital.
She was a trustee of Middlebury College, of which she was an alumna, and which awarded her an honorary D. Litt. for her long service to that college.
In 1976, Alice retired, eventually to Duncaster in Connecticut (An elderly housing unit in Bloomfield).
At the gathering on November 8, Alice's friends sat around the table sharing memories of her in the many aspects of her life: her social concerns, her intellectual pursuits, and home life. Due to a downpour they spent less time encircling the tree given by her children in her memory. But excerpts from her Christmas Letters and passages from Emily Dickinson and from St. Paul gave a finale to the tribute. The tree, a pink dogwood, is planted on the path between Blodgett and Cushing. A plaque will read:
          "Alice Guest Howson
Educator, Innovator, Caregiver, 'Groovy Gram', Loving and Loved."
Anyone wishing to contribute in Alice's memory may send a check to the college marked for the Howard Howson prize in religion. This prize and its recipeints were of great interest to Alice.17
