Michael Divine McGivney was born on 6 December 1888 at Waterbury, Connecticut..7,8,9 I found the birth certificate of Michael, but they had his name erroneously as Thomas. He had a brother three years later named Thomas, so this is definitely a clerical error. His parents were listed as Philip McGivney and Mary Dubby. A woman who sent me a family tree of the McGivneys showed that Father McGivney's father was Patrick. Patrick's siblings were Nicholas, Michael, Mary, and Catherine. Nicholas' son was Philip and it looks like he was the father of this Michael Divine McGivney. So, that makes Michael D. McGiveny the first cousin once removed of Father Michael McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus.
Michael Divine McGivney married Mary Ellen Mitchell, daughter of John Joseph Mitchell and Ellen M. Dawson, _btwn 1910 and 1917 at Connecticut. (an unknown value).10,11
Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. Michael Divine McGivney filled out a draft card on 5 June 1917 at Waterbury, Connecticut. It was noted that he was tall, medium build with grey eyes and brown hair. He was claiming exemption from the draft due to poor eyesight.12    Michael and Mary resided in June 1917 at Waterbury.13 Michael Divine McGivney was a brass caster for Chase Rolling Mill in June 1917 at Waterbury.14
Michael Divine McGivney, age 37, appears as head of household in the census of 16 January 1920 in Waterbury, New Haven, Connecticut, with Mary Ellen Mitchell, Helen Mitchell McGivney and John McGivney.2
Michael Divine McGivney and Mary Ellen Mitchell resided on 16 January 1920 at 1043 North Main Street, Waterbury, Connecticut, with their children Helen and John.2 Michael Divine McGivney was a caster in the brass mill on 16 January 1920 at Waterbury, Connecticut.2
Michael Divine McGivney, age 40, appears as head of household in the census of 1930 in Waterbury, Connecticut, with Mary Ellen Mitchell, Helen Mitchell McGivney, John McGivney, Mitchell T. McGivney, Jean Loretta McGivney and Joan L. McGivney.15
Michael Divine McGivney, age 54, appears as head of household in the census of 23 April 1940 in 19204 Nottingham Road, Cleveland, Ohio, with Mary Ellen Mitchell, Helen Mitchell McGivney, Mitchell T. McGivney, Jean Loretta McGivney and Joan L. McGivney.4    Michael Divine McGivney was a caster in a brass foundry in April 1940 at Cleveland, Ohio.16 He filled out a draft card in 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the old man's registration, was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who were born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897-men who were between 45 and 64 years old-who were not already in the military..5
Michael Divine McGivney resided in 1942 at 19204 Nottingham Road, Cleveland, Ohio, with his daughter, Joan.5 He was employed by Chase Brass and Copper in 1942 at 1155 Babbitt Road, Euclid, Ohio.5
