Joshua Mahony was an informant to the death of Nicholas Mahony, his father, on 24 December 1840 at Strawberry Lane, Sheffield South, Yorkshire, England, his home.17
Joshua Mahony appears as Joshua Maloney, age 15, in the census of 1841 at Spring Street, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England,in the household of Elizabeth Fleming, as her son, along with Ann Mahony and John Mahony, his siblings; A Thomas Doyle, age 20, was also enumerated on this census with this family. His occupation was listed as a clerk.18
Joshua Mahony married Jane Baker, daughter of William Baker and Mary (?), on 21 March 1842 at Parish Church of Sheffield, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Witnesses were Charles Healey and ? Hudson.19,6,7,8,20,13 Joshua Mahony and Jane Baker had thirteen children, several who were stillborn.13
Between March 1822 and 1845, Joshua resided in Sheffield from the time of his birth and even for several years after he married.2,1,21
From a young age, Joshua began a long career as a brushmaker. The census record of 1841 indicated that he was a brushmaker in Sheffield. More than likely, he started out by doing an apprenticeship. By January 1845, the birth certificate of his second child, Henry, showed that Joshua was a brushmaker in Halifax. Did he move there for an apprenticeship or for work? He continued working there as evidence by the birth certificate of son Fred in Dec 1848. (The training of apprentices was given great importance and seven years was served in learning the trade. The Brushmakers' Society took interest in the well-being of these apprentices and controlled the amount of apprentices that a Master could take on. The Society was well organized and the branches made an agreement that if a person was out of work and able-bodied, he was sent On The Tramp. He would be sent on a designated route to look for work. If there was employment locally, they would take him on. If not, his Blank book was annotated and he would be sent on to the next Branch with a further sum for the journey.) It is unknown if Joshua was sent to Halifax and other locales On The Tramp to find employment, for an apprenticeship, or he simply moved there, but it was a known fact that work was scarce in the 1840's. By 1850, however, Joshua was back working as a brushmaker in Sheffield. He was listed in a commercial directory there in 1855 as a brush manufacturer and in 1856, he was listed on his daughter's birth certificate as the same. In 1857, his occupation in another trade directory showed him to be a brushmaker. The words brush maufacturer and brushmaker most likely were used interchangeably. The 1861 English Census stated that he achieved a rank of Master Brush Maker. On subsequent birth certificates of his children, (1864, 1867, 1868), it was noted that he was a brushmaker. He continued as evidenced by the 1871 and 1881 Censuses which showed him to be a brush manufacturer. In January 1890, he was once again identified as a Master Brush Maker. (He had previously achieved the rank of Master Brush Maker despite many documents identifying him simply as a brushmaker.) When he immigrated to Waterbury, he resumed his brushmaking skills. In 1894, he was making fine brushes for painting and hatting at 13 Tracy Avenue in the Simonsville Section of town.3,22,23,24,25,26,27,5,28,29,30,6,31,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,13
Between January 1845 and December 1848, Joshua and Jane resided at Halifax, England. According to the birth certificates of two of their children, they lived in Greece Field and then in Lily Lane.40,41

Joshua Mahony, age 29, appears as head of household in the census of 1851 in 21 Holly Streeet, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, with Jane Baker, Henry Mahony, Frederick Mahony and Mary Jane Mahony. A servant, Sarah Johnson, age 15, also lived with the family.4

(Simonsville was named after Andrew Bayley Simons, a Goshen native. He learned the carpenter's trade and eventually settled in Waterbury about 1855. Simonsville was located at the corner of what is now Pearl Lake Road and Baldwin Street. It's a warehouse today, but there used to be a little school there.)54,55,56,57
