     John, age 12, appears in the census of 1841 in the Township of Staveley, Cartmel, Lancashire, England. It seems that he was living on this farm with numerous other workers as an agricultural laborer.1
     John Rigg married Ruth Pearson, daughter of John Pearson and Hannah Ashburner, on 14 December 1850 at Holy Trinity Church, Parish of Ulverston, Ulverston, Lancashire, England. They were married according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by Thomas How Chape, Curate. Witnesses to the marriage were Alexandra Graves and Mary Pearson, the bride's sister.10,2,11,4,12 His occupation identfied on his marriage certificate showed that he was a shoemaker at that time at Dalton, England.13
     John, age 22, appears as head of household in the census of 1851 in Dalton, Lancashire, England, with Ruth Pearson. An apprentice, age 16, also appears on the census with this family. The given name says RIGG and then it's a ditto for the surname which means his complete name is RIGG RIGG. I think the census taker did not take down his given name. Perhaps this appentice was a Rigg family member.2 John Rigg was a shoemaker in 1851 at Dalton, England.2 John was a cordwainer on 3 June 1852 at Dalton-In-Furness, England, as shown on his son, Thomas' birth certificate.14 and he resided in Dalton.15 John Ashburner Rigg's birth certificate noted that his father was a cordwainer in May 1854 at Dalton16 where John resided with Ruth.17 John was a cordwainer master in October 1856 at Dalton as indicated on his daughter Hannah's birth certificate.18,19 John and Ruth resided on 12 October 1856 at Dalton.20
     John was a Master Shoemaker in January 1859 at Dalton-In-Furness.21
     John, age 32, appears as head of household in the census of April 1861 in Dalton, Lancashire, England, with Ruth Pearson, Thomas Rigg, John Ashburner Rigg, Hannah Mary Rigg, Elizabeth Jane Rigg and Joseph Rigg. James Healey, age 28, was also enumerated with this family as a journeyman shoemaker, probably under John's tutelage. Ann Hurst, age 13, was a house servant to the family3 and John and Ruth resided in April 1861 at Dalton with their children Thomas, John, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Joseph.22,3 John was a shoemaker as shown on the census and a cordwainer (Master) as shown on son, Joseph's, birth certificate in 1861 at Dalton.23,24 According to son, William's birth certificate, John was a cordwainer (Master) in 1863 at Dalton-In-Furness, England, where he also resided.25,26 He was a cordwainer (Master) in January 1865 at Dalton, England.27,28,29 John resided on 28 January 1865 at Dalton, England.30,31 John was a master shoemaker in July 1866 at Dalton-In-Furness.32 He was a cordwainer in August 1869 at Dalton-In-Furness, England.33,34,35 John and Ruth resided on 3 August 1869 at Dalton.36
     The following is the text of a letter sent to John Rigg on 30 December 1869: Victoria by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen Defender of the faith to John Rigg of Broughton in Furness Lancashire Shoemaker, John Denney of Askam Lancashire Platelayer and Mrs. Betty Simpson of Lady Hall, Millom, Cumberland Widow greeting: We command you that all other things set aside and ceasing you and each of you personally be and appear before our justices assigned to keep the Peace and also to hear and determine diverse Felonies Trespasses and other Misdemeanors in the County of Cumberland committed at the next general Quarter Sessions of the Peace to be holden at Carlisle on Tuesday the Fourth day of January next, to tesify the truth according to your knowledge upon a certain appeal then and there to be tried wherein the Ulverston Poor Law Union are the Appellants and the Bootle Poor Law Union are the Respondents on the part and behalf of the Appellants and this you, nor any of you, shall in no wise omit, under the penalty of each of you of one hundred pounds- Witness William Earl of Lonsdale and keeper of the Rolls of our said county, and one of the justices assigend to keep the Peace within the said county the Thirtieth day of December in the Thirty-Third year of our Reign--Hodgson.37
     John Rigg, age 42, appears as head of household in the census of 1871 in Dalton-In-Furness, Lancashire, England, with Ruth Pearson, Thomas Rigg, John Ashburner Rigg, Hannah Mary Rigg, Elizabeth Jane Rigg, Joseph Rigg, William Robert Rigg, Ruth Ann Rigg, Septimus Pearson Rigg and Reuben Octavius Rigg.4 John Rigg and Ruth Pearson resided in 1871 at 161 Dalton, Dalton-In-Furness, Lancashire, England, with their children: Thomas, John, Hannah, Elizabeth, Joseph, William, Ruth, Septimus, and Reuben.4 John Rigg was a butcher and shoemaker with one man (hired hand) in 1871 at Dalton-In-Furness, England.4 He was a butcher on 8 July 1878 at Dalton, England.38
     John Rigg, age 52, appears as head of household in the census of 1881 in Dalton-In-Furness, Lancashire, England, with Ruth Pearson, William Robert Rigg, Joseph Rigg, Ruth Ann Rigg, Reuben Octavius Rigg, Septimus Pearson Rigg, Seth Smith, Hannah Mary Rigg and Margaret Ruth Smith.5 John and Ruth resided in 1881 at 22 Market Street, Dalton-In-Furness, Lancashire, England, and their children: Joseph, William, Ruth Ann, twins Septimus and Reuben, and daughter Hannah and her husband Seth Smith, along with their three month old daughter, Margaret Smith.5 John was a butcher in 1881 at Dalton-In-Furness.5,39 Other records, such as Ruth and John's death certificates and William Rigg's marriage certificate show that John was a Master butcher at Dalton-In-Furness.39,40,41
     John Rigg wrote a will on 18 April 1887 at Dalton-In-Furness, Lancaster, England. His children were listed as his heirs.42
     This is the last Will and Testament of me, John Rigg, Butcher and farmer of Dalton in Furness Lancashire I give devise and bequeath all my personal estate of whatever description and wheresoever situated unto my dear wife, Ruth Rigg absolutely for her sole use and enjoyment after paying my funeral expenses. I give devise and bequeath all my real estate unto my wife Ruth Rigg, my son Joseph Rigg, and Sydney Johnson Surgeon of Dalton-In-Furness in trust to sell by public auction or private contract the whole or my part of the same and invest all moneys arising therefrom after paying all my just debts in the public funds stocks or Railway Companies or mortgage or real estates in England or Wales and pay to my wife the whole of the yearly income accruing therefrom during her natural life or widowhood and after her second marriage or decease to divide equally amongst all my children who are then living the whole of my real estate equally share and share alike excepting my two eldest sons Thomas Rigg and John Ashburner Rigg whom consideration of what they have already received are to receive two hundred and fifty pounds each lefs(?) them any other children. In the event of the death of any of my children before the death of my wife or second marriage and they leave issue it is my will and order that such issues shall receive equally amongst them if more than one their parents share or portion when they are twenty one years of age. I appoint my wife, Ruth Rigg Joseph Rigg and Sydney Johnson aforesaid trustees and executors of this my will with power to charge for time trouble and expense incurred in carrying out the same and declare this to be my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills and unto which I have set my hand this eighteenth day of April one thousand eight hundred and eighty seven. Signed by the said John Rigg the testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us present at the same time who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses the interlineation of the fifth line from the foot thereof being first inverted. John Rigg, William Rigg, Edward Hall. Proved at Lancaster the twenty sixth day of May 1887 by the oath of Ruth Rigg widow relict of the deceased Joseph Rigg son of the deceased and Sydney Johnson the ? ? ? in the will to whom monnies ? now granted. The testator John Rigg was late of Dalton-In-Furness in the County of Lancaster butcher and farmer and died the nineteenth day of April 1887 at Dalton in Furness.
     On the Twenty sixth day of May 1887 the Will of John Rigg late of Dalton in Furness in the County of Lancaster Butcher and farmer deceased, who died on the 19th day of April 1887 at Dalton in Furness aforesaid was proved in Her Majesty's High Court of Justice in the District registry attached to the Probate Division thereof at Lancaster by the Oaths of Ruth Rigg widow Relict of the said deceased and Joseph Rigg Butcher son of the said deceased both of 55 Market Street Dalton in Furness aforesaid and Sydney Johnson of Dalton in Furness aforesaid Surgeon the executors named (in the said will) they having been sworn duly to administer the presonal estate Gross amount 836"7" Pounds Net Amount 454"9"8 pounds.43

     John died on 19 April 1887 at 55 Market Street, Dalton-In-Furness, Ulverston, Lancashire, England, of pneumonia lasting 14 days. His son-in-law, William Robinson was the informant to the death..6,42
     John Rigg had his will proved on 26 May 1887 at Dalton-In-Furness, England. Ruth Pearson and Joseph Rigg served as executors. Sydney Johnson, surgeon, was also listed as an executor to the will.43
