Over the years, he also contributed his fund-raising skills to other areas: he was chairman of the Amherst Community Chest in 1950, and in 1953 was instrumental in establishing the New England Colleges Fund- a collaborative effort among New England private colleges that seeks educational donations from corporations. He served as a trustee of the Northampton School For Girls from 1960 to 1968.12 They were summer residents of East Chop on Martha's Vineyard for over 60 years.12,14
     James Alfred Guest died on 6 October 1997 at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, Massachusetts, at age 86.12,17
