           William Joseph Begley was born on 21 May 1887 at Ballinamona, District of Ardmore, Union of Youghal, County Waterford, Ireland. His father was an informant to his birth.10,11,12,13,14,15,16 He also went by the name of Willie.17 He was educated in elementary school at Ireland.16
     William Joseph Begley appears as Willie Joseph, age14, in the census of 1901 at Ballynamona, Ardmore Parish, County Waterford, Ireland,in the household of William Begley as his son, along with Bridget Drohan, John Begley, Michael Begley, Mary Ellen Begley and Eileen Begley.2    William Joseph Begley was a Roman Catholic.2 He ran away from home to his aunt in Liverpool, England who sent him to the US. in 1904.18,19 He was naturalized on 24 May 1910 at the United States. The papers described him as 23 years old, 5 ft. 8 in., blue eyes, and brown hair.20,21
     Willie joined the New York City Police Department on 11 October 1911. Seven years later, he was promoted to First Grade Detective. He received 5 commendations and was a member of the Police Department Honor Legion.18
     William Joseph Begley married Catherine McDonough on 5 July 1914 at St. Paul's Church, New York.4,22,18,23
     Between 1917 and 1928, per his obituary, he was one of the best known detectives at Harlem.18
     Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. William Joseph Begley filled out a draft card on 5 June 1917 at Manhattan, New York. It showed that he was tall, medium build, blue eyes, and brown hair.3   
     William's a corporal in the Infantry.3
     William Joseph Begley resided in June 1917 at 105 E. 122 Street, New York, New York, with his wife and child.3 He was a patrolman at the 31st Precinct in June 1917 at New York City, New York.3
     William Joseph Begley, age 33, appears as head of household in the census of 19 January 1920 in Bronx, Bronx, New York, with Catherine McDonough and Kathleen Marie Begley. Rose Pallezze, a boarder was also enumerated with this family. She was 22 and a native of Italy.4   
     William Joseph Begley and Catherine McDonough resided in January 1920 at 1071 West Farms Road, Bronx, New York, with their daughter, Kathleen.4 William was a patrolman for the New York City Police Department on 19 January 1920.4 In February 1928, he was promoted to Sargeant and transferred to the Mercer Street Precinct at the Bronx where he worked until his death.18
     William Joseph Begley, age 42, appears as head of household in the census of 4 April 1930 in Bronx, Bronx, New York, with Catherine McDonough, Kathleen Marie Begley and Thomas Begley.5    William Joseph Begley and Catherine resided on 4 April 1930 at 1631 Yates Avenue, Bronx, New York, with their daughter, Kathleen, and Will's nephew, Thomas Begley.5 William was a sargeant in the patrol division on 4 April 1930.5
     His daughter remembers that he ate fatty foods and smoked Camel cigarettes.18
     Willie died on 30 December 1934 at 1631 Yates Avenue, Bronx, New York, at age 47 of atherosclerosis. The night before he died, he was complaining about a pain in his left arm.24,18,16 He was buried on 3 January 1935 at St. Raymond's Cemetery, Bronx, New York.18,25
