Dr. Lawrence Francis McManus Sr.1

           Dr. Lawrence Francis McManus Sr. was born on 4 January 1940 at Manhattan, New York..2 He was educated at Manhattan College, Manhattan, New York, graduating wiht a B.S. in Chemistry and Math.2 He was educated at NY Medical School-5th Avenue, New York, New York, graduating with a medical degree.2 He did his residency in the U.S. Army: an internship at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., his surgical residency at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and an orthopaedic residency at Tripler Army General Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii.2 He was an orthopaedic surgeon in the U.S. Army for 7 years.2 He was retired from the US Army in December 1989 due to a medical disability.2
     Dr. Lawrence Francis McManus Sr. contracted Hepatitis B from a patient in the early 1980's. He became very ill and was in end stage liver failure when he received a liver transplant on 11 November 1991 at University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Since his transplant he has been unable to return to practicing medicine. However, he became an organ and tissue donation expert. He served on the United Network of Organ Sharing Board of Directors Communication Committee. He has gone throughout the Southeast and other parts of the U.S. giving speeches on organ and tissue donation. He pushed legislation through the South Carolina Legislature regarding a bill to support organ and tissue donation education, raise funds, and form the Gift of Life Foundation. He was nominated to the Board of Directors.2
     Dr. Lawrence Francis McManus Sr. died on 19 June 2001 at South Carolina at age 61.
