In December 1944, four ships comprising the Third Fleet sailed directly into the largest storm that the US Navy had ever encountered, deadly typhoon Cobra with 90 foot seas and 160 mph winds. Three ships were sunk, 28 ships damaged, 146 aircraft destroyed, and 756 men lost at sea. (There were about 300 men on each ship). It is said that Admiral William "Bull" Halsey neglected the Law of Storms-the unofficial bible of all seamen. William F. Hart was among those who drowned at sea. The book Down to the Sea (2007), by Bruce Henderson, is a riveting account of the events leading up to the disaster, the numerous acts of heroism during the storm, and the naval courts of inquiry in the aftermath.⁵
