Relationship5th great-grandfather of Taryn Lynn Phelan
Robert Pearson was born circa 1771 at England.. (No birth/christening or other proof has been found for Robert's parents. The fact that some of Robert's children and grandchildren carry the middle name of WARRINER lead me beleive this name is related to the PEARSON lines........somewhere in their ancestry. I do not think it is in Martha's line unless it ties into her father John's ancestry. The hunt continues.)1

The personal description given for him was that he was 5'4" tall weighing 145 lbs. He was white with a dark complexion, had blue eyes and brown hair. Other distinguishing marks were a crooked thumb on his right hand. (This intention might havebeen filed in order to sign up for the draft a few days later.)5
Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. Seth Smith filled out a draft card on 5 June 1917 at Waterbury, Connecticut. He was short height, slender build, with blue eyes and light hair. It was noted that he had a stiff thumb. His occupation was noted to be a plumber and he was single. He was discharged from the home on 7 June 1928.28 (In 1865, near the end of the Civil War, President Lincoln signed an act creating the National Asylum (later changed to Home) for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. The Eastern Branch at Togus, Maine was the first of the new homes to open in November 1866. The name "Togus" comes from the Native American name Worromongtogus, which means "mineral water". Togus' role gradually changed from a domiciliary or home to a full-service medical center. It is currently named the VAMC Togus, in Augustus.)29
Seth Smith, age 42, appears as Seth Smith in the census of 3 April 1930 in The Fitch House and Hospital For Soldiers, Darien, Fairfield, Connecticut.30    Fitch's Home For Soldiers and Orphans was located in Darien, Connecticut. Also known as the Noroton Home, it was erected by Benjamin Fitch for soldiers and the children of soldiers and was dedicated July 4, 1864. It was incorporated by legislation in 1864 and until 1883 the Home received limited aid from the State of Connecticut. On May 1, 1887, the Connecticut State Soldiers' Home Board assumed control of the Home and renamed the facility Fitch's Home For Soldiers.31
From 1864 to 1940, the Fitch Home served the needs of hundreds of orphans and thousands of men who served their country in various wars. Over two thousand of those veterans now rest in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien. 32
On August 28, 1940, the Fitch's Home For Soldiers was vacated. Everyone moved to the new facility in Rocky Hill. The building and grounds were turned over to the State Military Department. On September 14, 1940, a new Veterans' Home at Rocky Hill, constructed and equipped by the State of Connecticut and the United States as a Public Works Administration project, was dedicated.32
Seth Smith resided in 1935 at Waterbury, Connecticut.33 He was Protestant.34
Seth began military service on 7 April 1941 at NP-17-Va., Yorktown, Virginia. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps under the War Department at F-2, Mt. Solon, Virginia. The type of work was Forestry and the manner of performance was satisfactory. His occupational qualifications were as a machine operator.
(The Civilian Conservation Corp was a work relief program for young men from unemployed families, established on March 21, 1933 by Franklin D. Roosevelt, operating in every state. Each enrollee earned at least $30 a month-with the requirement that $25 of that be sent home to family. Young men aged 18-25 (and a certain number of destitute war veterans of any age) enrolled for 6 months with the option of enrolling for another 6 months, up to 2 years.)22,35 He ended military service on 3 June 1941 at Camp F-1-Va, Yorktown, Virginia, Seth was honorably discharged from the Civilian Conservation Corps by reason of physical disability. The discharge reads as follows:

The front page of his discharge stated:
"Said Seth Smith was born in England. When enrolled he was 43 years of age and by occupation a machine operator. He had gray eyes, gray hair, ruddy complexion, and was 5 feet 5 inches in height. His color was white."22
