     Mrs. Gladys (Whitehouse) Dwyer, 93, of 3153 Heatherwood Lane, died Monday at Beneva Nursing Pavilion. She was the widow of John Dwyer.
     Mrs. Dwyer was born Dec. 4, 1901, in Barrow-in-Furness, England, daughter of the late Alfred and Ruth ( Griggs-sic) Whitehouse. She lived in Waterbury, Conn., for mnay years until moving to Sarasota neasrly 10 years ago. She was a former member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Waterbury.
     She leaves two sons, John W. Dwyer of Sarasota and Edward Dwyer of Naugatuck, Conn; eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
     Graveside services Friday in New Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterbury.8

Ex-Waterbury Man Dies in Arizona
John Bromley Smith, formerly of Waterbury, died Friday in Douglas, Arizona after a brief illness. He was born in England, son of Seth and Hannah (Rigg) Smith. He had lived in this city several years before moving to Arizona in 1935. He was a member of Waterbury Lodge of Elks. Survivors include a brother Seth Smith of Kecouchtan, VA; four sisters, Mrs. Frank Flanigan, Cheshire; Mrs. Beatrice Mahoney, Meriden; Mrs. A. H. Mather, Bridgeport; & Mrs. Ellen Cronin, Waterbury, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 P.M. at the Alderson Funeral Home, South Main Street, Cheshire. Methodist church wil officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Cheshire.37

     Seth Smith declared his intention to become a Unites States citizen on 2 June 1917 at Waterbury District Court, Waterbury, Connecticut. The personal description given for him was that he was 5'4" tall weighing 145 lbs. He was white with a dark complexion, had blue eyes and brown hair. Other distinguishing marks were a crooked thumb on his right hand. (This intention might havebeen filed in order to sign up for the draft a few days later.)5
     Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. Seth Smith filled out a draft card on 5 June 1917 at Waterbury, Connecticut. He was short height, slender build, with blue eyes and light hair. It was noted that he had a stiff thumb. He also claimed exemption from the draft on the grounds that he was employed by a company manufacturing material for the government.6
     Seth Smith resided in June 1917 at 383 Wilson Street, Waterbury, Connecticut.22,5 He was a tube maker at American Brass Company (B & B Branch) in June 1917 at Waterbury, Connecticut.22 He was naturalized at Massachusetts; The record which shows the Date of Admission and the Certificate Number along with the Petition Number is illegible. It shows that his residence was 383 Wilson Street at the time.23 He began military service on 19 September 1917 at Waterbury, Connecticut, as a private in the Quartermaster Corps.24 He ended military service on 18 February 1919 at Camp Devine, Massachusetts, due to demobilization.25 He was a plumber in 1927.26 26 July 1927, Seth was admitted to a U.S. National Home For Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Togus, Maine, due to Neurasthenia and simple ankylosis of a fibrous right thumb. On his application, it shows that he was 5'2" tall, had a ruddy complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair. He could read and write and was Protestant. His occupation was noted to be a plumber and he was single. He was discharged from the home on 7 June 1928.27
     Seth Smith, age 42, appears as Seth Smith in the census of 3 April 1930 in The Fitch House and Hospital For Soldiers, Darien, Fairfield, Connecticut.28
     Seth Smith resided in 1935 at Waterbury, Connecticut.29 He was Protestant.30
     Seth began military service on 7 April 1941 at NP-17-Va., Yorktown, Virginia. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps under the War Department at F-2, Mt. Solon, Virginia. The type of work was Forestry and the manner of performance was satisfactory. His occupational qualifications were as a machine operator.
(The Civilian Conservation Corp was a work relief program for young men from unemployed families, established on March 21, 1933 by Franklin D. Roosevelt, operating in every state. Each enrollee earned at least $30 a month-with the requirement that $25 of that be sent home to family. Young men aged 18-25 (and a certain number of destitute war veterans of any age) enrolled for 6 months with the option of enrolling for another 6 months, up to 2 years.)31,32 He ended military service on 3 June 1941 at Camp F-1-Va, Yorktown, Virginia, Seth was honorably discharged from the Civilian Conservation Corps by reason of physical disability. The discharge paper did not specify what that disability was.
"The Project Superintenent, Mr.J.G. Moffett, Mt. Solon, Va., made the following estimate of Seth Smith as a workman: 'A satisfactory workman'".
The discharge reads as follows:
"Enrollee notified of ineligibility for reselection during existence of disability. Provisions of Federal Compensation Act have been read to this man."
The front page of his discharge stated:
"Said Seth Smith was born in England. When enrolled he was 43 years of age and by occupation a machine operator. He had gray eyes, gray hair, ruddy complexion, and was 5 feet 5 inches in height. His color was white."31
     Seth Smith resided in April 1949 at Kecouchtan, Virginia.33
     Seth Smith died after 1949 in a Vet's Home (probably at Rocky Hill.)33,34 He was buried at Riverside Cemetery, Waterbury, Connecticut, Section P, Lot 432.
