Obituaries and Other News Articles

The following article was viewed on ZoomInfo.Com. It was originally written as a NVCC Press release on 5 September 2002:
Ruth Parsons, the motivating force behind the effort to establish a community college in Waterbury in the 1960's, was remembered during a September 5 ceremony at Naugatuck Valley Community College. The ceremony included the dedication of Ruth Parsons Drive, the entrance road to the college, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque highlighting her contributions to the community.
As an advocate for public education, Ruth Parsons worked tirelessly to help establish a community college in Waterbury in the 1960s. She volunteered untold hours in educating political leaders and the public of the significant impact a community college could have on the economic development of Waterbury. A journalist at what was then the Waterbury American, Mrs. Parsons died unexpectedly at age 50 in 1973.
Joined by members of the Parsons family, area educators and others, NVCC President Richard L. Sanders explained that the original idea for naming the road was developed by several long-serving members of the college's Regional Advisory Council, who knew and had worked with Mrs. Parsons.
A member of the original Committee for a Waterbury Community College, Mrs. Parsons presented convincing evidence to the Connecticut General Assembly that led to the founding of Mattatuck Community College in 1967, the precursor to NVCC. At the time of her death, she was actively serving on the college's advisory committee.
Fran Brennan, director of the University of Connecticut Waterbury campus and a member of NVCC's Regional Advisory Council, recalled Mrs. Parsons as an outstanding "reporter" whose involvement in educational and political issues resulted in "wide-ranging contributions" to the community.
"I have long been an advocate of this action being taken on behalf of Ruth Parsons, the unsung heroine of the Founders of Mattatuck Community College," said Dr. Lawrence Shea, who served with Mrs. Parsons on the committee to establish the higher education center..19

Uncle Joshua Mahony was also listed on the log, but a few spaces above them. They were returning from a visit to Sheffield. The family sailed from Liverpool on the Lucania.6 She resided on 27 August 1898 at 37 Welton Street, Waterbury, Connecticut.6 Lily Burton grew up on Bramwell Street in North Sheffield, England, a few houses away from her cousin, Clara Ellen Knutton, Mabel and Beatrice's mother. They were about the same age.
Lily's mother, Elizabeth Whiteley and Clara's mother, Sarah, were sisters. Sarah and her husband, Joseph Chambers took in their granddaughter, Beatrice Littlehales after the death of her mother, Clara in the USA.
Elizabeth and her daughter took in Mabel Littlehales in England when Clara died. They raised her in England until age 8 and Lily Burton came to the US with Mabel. The reason may have been to marry Joshua Mahony. After the death of his wife, Eliza Littlehales Mahony, Joshua went to England to possibly marry Lily. He probably knew her through Clara Knutton Litttlehales, his sister-in-law. Mabel lived with Lily and Joshua in Waterbury, CT and he adopted Mabel.19

John Henry Smith was retired on 4 May 1923 at Drigg, England. The following was an article written in The News in 1923, Ulverston, England:
STATIONMASTER ARTIST

Retirement of Mr. J. H. Smith of Drigg

One seldom hears of an artistic stationmaster, but for 33 years the village of Drigg, in Mr. John H. Smith possessed a stationmaster whose abilities as a portrait painter have won him a very wide reputation. After serving the railway Company for 50 years, 41 of which have been spent as a stationmaster, Mr. Smith retired recently, and last Friday night the inhabitants expressed their appreciation of his services and courteous attention to the needs of the travelling public through a presentation.
Mr. Smith, who is a native of Ulverston, showed a natural aptitude in painting in his youth, and studied for some years at the Barrow School of Art. At Drigg he found opportunities for developing his talent, and his little studio attracted many visitors, who pronounced their admiration of his work. A chance friendship sprung up between this art-loving stationmaster and Sir John Lavery, one of the most famous of modern painters and, though brief, it furnished Mr. Smith with the opportunity of acquiring much of his later (?)d uring various visits to London, Mr. Smith was fortunate enough to be able to study the methods of Sir John and other well known artists, while at work in their studios, and he derived considerable benefit from these visits.
Though of a retiring disposition, and having a dislike of advertisement, he gradually enhanced his reputation as a painter, and eventually he had portraits exhibited in the Royal Academy, the Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool), and many other exhibitions, and among those who have sat for him were Bishop Diggle, of Carlisle, and Mr. Alfred Ollivant, the novelist. He was a member of the Lake Artists' Association.
Mr. Smith's retirement heralded the formation of a committee to arrange for a presentation. There were 108 sub-scribers to the present, which took the form of a substantial cheque, a case of cutlery being handed to Mrs. Smith. The Rev. W. J. A. Burrow was the chairman and paid a great tribute to Mr. Smith's constant kindness and courtesy in all his duties at Drigg Station. Mr. Jas. Sharpe, on behalf of the farmers, Mr. W. Reed, for the residents of the village and the surounding district, Mr. McLelland, of St. Bees, and Mr. Porter, also made speeches in a similar strain, and made appreciative reference to his talent as a painter. Mr. Burns Lindow then made the presentation, and Mr. Smith responded on behalf of his wife and himself. "He's a jolly good fellow" was heartily sung, and there was no mistaking, throughout the meeting, the esteem with which the people of the district regard him.36,37
John Henry Smith died on 16 November 1938 at Woodside, Drigg, Holmrook, Cumberland, England, at age 81.38
John Henry Smith had his will proved on 20 January 1939 at Carlisle, England. Nellie Smith and Mary Smith, his daughters, served as administrators. The estate was valued at £ 386.39
