The Connecticut “Military Census” was taken in 1917–1918 at the direction of the General Assembly with an eye to assessing manpower available for war and other resources in the state. The census included surveys on agriculture, factories, and even automobiles, but the forms included here are questionnaires filled out by men ages 16 and over. The census was much more than a simple name count, and these questionnaires asked for details in a number of areas: name, post office address, trade or profession, agemarital status, number of dependents, citizenship, military service, and physical disability. They also asked men to report on various skills, including whether they could ride a horse or drive a team, ride a motorcycle, operate a wireless, handle a steam engine or a boat, or swim well. The following is a speech written and read by Merton C. Grilley, Vice President of Producto Machine to Jack Healey:
This is not to be, as is evident, a somber or sober evening, but one set aside for happy recollections of many pleasant days and incidents that we have experienced together over the last fifteen years.
We have always counted on your experience and skillful know-how to guide our foundry operations from its earliest beginnings to our present enlarged stature. More important than this experience was the ever present cheerfulness and cooperativeness of manner with which you worked with all of your fellow employees. This trait alone was many times invaluable when pressures and problems of daily operations seemed insurmountable. I think also that this outward attitude is even more commendable when one realizes that over the years you have encountered your share of personal misfortunes.
We are also indebted for the effective way in which you helped cement our foundry relations with our good friends at Bridgeport Machines, and it is to your credit that evidence of this shown tonight by the attendance of their key people.
We shall miss you and will look forward to frequent visits over the years to come, and we know that your days ahead will be filled with continued good fortunes as only befalls our happy Irish friend named "Jack".
Sincerely, Mert.43
