Dan Phelan became a baseball player. The following is information about the 1884 Baseball Season:
This is the first season of the Connecticut League, the first all-Connecticut professional League-also Connie Mack's first season in professional baseball (beginning a 50-year career as player, manager, and owner.) Mack played for Meriden, mostly catching and occasionally outfield. Daniel Phelon played for Waterbury, as regular first baseman- Waterbury won the League championship; Meriden was second.
The teams in the league were: Waterbury, Meriden, Hartford, New Britain, Willimantic, and Rockville.
The Waterbury lineup was mostly Irish, as was the entire league. For Waterbury, Burke was right fielder; Mellon, left fielder; Dailey, catcher; Magner, shortstop; Lovett, pitcher; Guest, second base; Allman, third base; and Phalon, first base. Phalon was a good hitter so in most games he hit fourth (cleanup).
Here are some brief accounts of some Waterbury games taken from the Waterbury American which had good coverage:
July 4 (Friday)-Doubleheader against New Britain. As was customary because of short distances, the first game was in New Britain in the morning, the second in Waterbury in the afternoon. Phalon batted cleanup in each game. He got two hits in the first game and two in the second game. In the field, he had 9 putouts in the first game and 10 in the second. The first baseman gets the credit for the putouts on ground balls that are hit around the infield. New Britain won the morning game 3-0; Waterbury won the afternoon game 6-0.
