Obituaries and Other News Articles

On 18 June 1935, the obituary in the Waterbury Newspaper read:
In the death last evening of Mrs. Anna Dawson Mitchell Dwyer, widow of the late John Dwyer, the Washington Hill section of the city lost one of its best known and sincerely beloved residents. A native of County Westmeath, Ireland, Mrs. Dwyer had resided in the south end section of Waterbury for more than half a century. She came to America as a young girl and made her home for a short time in Hartford. She was one, whose many kind and broad sympathies endeared her to countless friends, and was charitably inclined, spiritually as well as materially, and many were indebted to her for little acts of thoughtfulness performed without display and with no selfish thought of recompense. Mrs. Dwyer was an ideal mother, sincere friend and an excellent neighbor. She manifested a keen interest in the activities of the city and of St. Francis Xavier church which she devotedly attended. Her personal knowledge of the Washington Hill section, its development and particularly its residents through the passing years made her a most interesting person to converse with. She enjoyed many happy friendships in all parts of Waterburyand her passing will be missed by many as a personal loss. CARS COLLIDE IN NEWTOWN; DRIVER PROVES SOBRIETY

Bridgeport Man Involved-Offers to Be Examined

An automobile owned and operated by David Knapp, 485 Barnum avenue, Bridgeport and a touring car owned by Anna F. Dwyer, 700 Baldwin avenue, Waterbury, collied on the Danbury road about 930 Saturday night near the residence of Henry taylor on Mount Pleasant. The left front wheels, left fenders and wishbones of both cars were damaged in the collision which occurred on the bend in the road south of the Talor residence. The occupants of both cars escaped uninjured in the sudden crash.

Traffic Jammed

Deputy Sheriff Morris D. Beers arrived at the scene of the accident shortly after it happened and soon got traffic under way. While no arrests were made in the case, Sheriff Beers, owing to charges made by the occupants of the other car, took Knapp to the office of Dr. Edward L. Kingham on Main Street for examination. Knapp volunteered to accompany the sheriff and Dr. Kingham reported that there were no signs of liquor to be found on Knapp. There were two other women riding in the Dwyer machine and Knapp was accompanied by another man who disappeared following the crash.43

Peter Dawson was born at Ireland.2
Peter Dawson married Ellen Cummins on 11 January 1837 at Parish of Ballyloughloe, County Westmeath, Ireland. Witnesses to the marriage were John Conlon and Mary Curly.1 Peter Dawson was Roman Catholic.3
Peter Dawson died on 21 January 1891 at Baylin, Parish of Ballyloughloe, County Westmeath, Ireland.4

The following was taken from a book called The Place Names of Westmeath~The Ordnance Survey Letters Referring to the County, Abridged and Edited, by Rev. Paul Walshe: The Parish of Ballyloughloe, Athlone, September 4, 1837.
     Dear Sir,
The Parish of Ballyloughloe derived that name from a small village of the same name, situated about 5 miles east and north of Athlone, in which the parish church and chapel are situated. But the people never call the parish Ballyloughloe, but Calree, which was the ancient name of Magawley's country in Westmeath. The name Ballyloughloe seems to have been originally that of a castle situated on the bank of a lake called Loch Luatha, and to have been in latter ages transferred to the parish. Of this castle only one vault now remains, but its site should be marked on the ordnance map. I was always under the impression that Ballyloughloe was an Englsih castle or garrison, but I find that tradition ascribes the erection of it to Magawley, the Irish chief of Calree.
The following are the chief remarkable places of Ballyloughloe:
     1. The lake called Loch luatha. This has been drained and is now just dried up. It lies to the north of the old house of Mount Temple, and about four years ago it covered about two acres during the winter months. It still pours out a stream, which turns a mill at the townland of Creeve, and flows on to the Shannon.
     2. The site of Magawley's castle of Ballyloughloe, of which nothing remains but one vault as already remarked.
     3. Dunegan castle, now a ruin, in the townland of the same name.
     4. Not far from the site of the castle at Ballyloughloe is shown the site of a small abbey, but no remains of any walls. Immediately to the west of the site of the abbey is a fine spring called Fuaran, which is the general term for a cold spring throughout the district. To the east of the abbey lies a subdivision of the townland of Mount Temple, containing about one hundred acres called Grianan, which name it receives from a fort whch stands uopon it.
(Walshe notes: there is not and never has been a townland called Ballyloughloe. Two townalnd names at least, which were in use until the Cromwelllian Period were obliterated by the Temple family, who gave the name Mount Temple to the place. These appear in the Down Survey map and in the Book of Surveys as Grynan and Monkestowne. The castle was situated on Grynan.)
     5. Near the Protestant church are the ruins of a small chapel, said to have been built by the Magawleys, chiefs of Calree.
Calraighe was certainly the ancient name of a territory comprising the parish of Ballyloughloe, as appears from several evidences.
     1. The parish is always called Calree by the people
     2. There is a chapel in Ballynurry called the chapel of Calree
     3. There is a townland in the parish called Boyanagh Calree
     4. The hill of Tullymagawley preserves as a 'monumentum aere perennius' the name of the ancient Lord of the soil. It was perhaps, the hill on which Mag Amhalghadha was inaugurated. Mag Amhalghadha of Calraighe an chalaidh is of the southern Ui Neil, and descends frmo Maine, the progenitor of the men of Tefia. The following ruins of castles are still to be seen in this territory of Calraighe, and if, according to tradition, they all belonged to Magawley, he must have been a chief of no small power:
     1. The castle of Carn
     2. the castle of Creeve
     3. The castle of Cloghamarshall (Cloghmarichall)
     4. the castle of Moydrum .
An esker or low ridge of sand hills runs very consrpicuously through this parish, and in the townland of Mount Temple, is cut across and formed into a military moat of ample dimensions and remarkable height, and I should not at all be surprised if this moat, with its attendant residences was the feature originally called 'Baile loch luatha'. It appears from the book of Lecan that this esker could not be the celebrated boundary called 'Eiscir Riada' which extends from Dublin to Galway, as that ridge strikes Clonard, Moylena (two miles north of Tullamore), and Clonmacnoise.
It is now one o'clock at night.
     Your obedient servant, John O'Donovan.5
